Pasadena City Council could award contracts for Greenways design on Monday! Speak up for All Ages and Abilities Greenways

The Pasadena City Council will consider approving two contracts for design (item 6) and public outreach (item 7) on four north/south Greenways. This project is funded by an award from LA Metro. All Ages and Abilities Greenways will reduce traffic speeds on these streets to around 20 MPH and reduce cut-through traffic, so that the streets will be safe and quiet for residents, and can serve as comfortable routes for walking and biking. The four streets — El Molino, Wilson, Sierra Bonita, and Craig — are the four lowest-volume streets that cross the 210 freeway.  That makes them a natural choice for safe, slow speed travel.

Possible Talking Points

Everyone should tell City Council:

• An introduction (e.g. I am a Pasadena resident, a person who works in Pasadena, etc.)
  

• I support the contracts, and I want to see All Ages and Abilities Greenways built to create safe neighborhood streets.

You might also add some of these points:

• Everyone wants to live on a safe, quiet street. Residents always want people to drive slowly in front of their homes. Building safe Greenways will slow down drivers on four neighborhood streets, and so will be very popular with residents who live along those streets.

• I support the contracts for design and public outreach. The public outreach will give the community a chance to shape important safety projects, including the Greenways. I am not fooled by misinformation from KPM, and I understand that these contracts will create the public process.

• The four streets  planned as Greenways – El Molino, Wilson, Sierra Bonita, and Craig – are the four lowest-volume streets that cross the 210 freeway.  That makes them a natural choice for safe, low-speed travel. Greenways create low speeds and reduce cut-through traffic using traffic-calming like speed humps and diverters.

• The Greenways have outstanding community support!  More than 1000 people have signed petitions of support and written over 270 comments.  Plus, 18 local organizations have endorsed All Ages & Abilities Greenways, including the PUSD School Board, the League of Women Voters, the NAACP, the Accessibility and Disability Commission, the Environmental Advisory Commission, and the Transportation Advisory Commission. 

• Greenways make streets safer while allowing access for cars and emergency vehicles.  Simple traffic calming, like speed humps with emergency vehicle cut-throughs, reduce speeding while providing access for everyone. 

• Most people - about 60% - say they would like to ride a bike sometimes, but need safe spaces to do so. Building a network of safe bike routes is the best way to shift more trips to biking and micro-mobility. This frees up parking spaces for drivers, reduces traffic, and makes our city more accessible and vibrant. This has worked in more than a hundred other cities, and it will work here too!

• The Greenways will provide safe routes to schools, and give students transportation options.  That’s why the PUSD school system, as well as PCC, Caltech, Polytechnic, and the Sequoyah school all support All Ages and Abilities Greenways. Kids thrive when they get the independence, fun, and exercise of getting themselves to school. 

• Speeding and safety on neighborhood streets are major issues! El Molino and Wilson are both identified as corridors with high rates of traffic injuries by the new Roadway Safety Action Plan. Pasadena averages 600 injuries and 5 deaths each year due to dangerous driving. Speeding and dangerous driving are a top issue for many residents. We want our neighborhoods to be safe!
