Bike Month Proclamation!

Hear ye, hear ye! The city of Pasadena has proclaimed May 2025 to be Pasadena Bike Month! Check out these great comments from local advocates who attended the Bike Month Proclamation event at city hall. Thank you to City Council and Pasadena DOT staff for supporting this event and hosting us at city hall.

Comments from Matt Stumbo

Good evening Mayor Gordo, members of the City Council, staff, and fellow members of the greater Pasadena community. I'm Matt Stumbo. I live, work, walk, drive, and bike in Pasadena.

It's my pleasure to be speaking on behalf of the Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition, an all-volunteer organization. We've been leading walks and bike rides that share the beauty of our city, and advocating for safer streets for over ten years. We are very happy to be partnering with Day One and the City of Pasadena for Bike Month 2025, and we'd like to thank you for putting staff time, energy, and funding into Bike Month this year. We hope you'll celebrate Bike Month with us for many years to come.

In my experience there is no better way to enjoy Pasadena than by bike. The best part of my day is when I pick up my son from preschool and we ride home together on our bike. Riding in the front of our cargo bike, my son gets to truly see and experience Pasadena and I have the joy of watching him take it all in. Biking has connected us deeper to our community than I thought possible. As we ride along tree lined streets, the breeze in our faces, we get to know the character of each neighborhood and the feel of Pasadena as it changes through the seasons. As we approach our home we often see our friends and neighbors, with whom we share a smile, a wave, and, when we have the time, catch up.

This is why I’m excited about bike month, it’s not just that we get to enjoy ice cream and pie, learn about art and science, socialize, and brush up on our cycling skills. Biking around Pasadena strengthens our connection to our community and celebrating bike month provides us an opportunity to share that. Hop on your bike and come join us on the streets of Pasadena! I hope residents and visitors young and old will enjoy Pasadena as my family and I enjoy Pasadena - on two wheels. Thank you.

Comments from Colin Bogart

Good evening Mayor Gordo, Council Members and City Staff. My name is Colin Bogart and I work for Day One, and serve as the lead organizer of Pasadena Bike Month. We’re so pleased, to once again, be working with the City, the Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition, and the Pasadena community to present a full month of bike events for our community in May. National Bike Month and Bike to Work Day are being celebrated in cities across the US and we’re always proud to be joining that celebration.

We have a great schedule of events and rides planned for every weekend this month. We’re especially excited about a collaboration with the Hastings Branch Library on Saturday May 17, where kids can decorate their bikes and helmets, get a bike safety check courtesy of Pasadena Cyclery, and go on a short ride with family. We’re also planning a short family ride to close out Family Fun Day at La Pintoresca Park on Saturday May 24th. The following day, Sunday May 25th will be a Kids Bike Skills clinic at Robinson Park, 2-4pm. Children will be able to learn basic bike handling skills and rules of the road, guided by certified cycling instructors.

This year features increased partnerships with local bike shops, which are offering multiple fix a flat classes and are also hosting group rides of their own. Local businesses and business associations like the Playhouse Village and Old Pasadena have also shown strong support this year, for which we are grateful.

I’d also like to mention that once again, we’re hosting an E-Bike Expo. This year it will be on Sunday May 18th at the Rosebowl 3 mile loop near Seco St. and Rosemont, 10am to 2pm. Seven local bike shops will be participating and the public will have a chance to test ride electric bikes from all of those shops, all in one convenient location. We will also have staff from PWP at the event, so people can learn about the City’s e-bike rebate program and how to apply. As I understand it, there’s still funding available for this popular program, especially for income qualified households.

Last but not least, we’re looking forward to hosting a Bike to Work Day pit-stop in front of City Hall on Thursday, May 15th, 7-10am. Bike to Work Day is a great opportunity for people to try biking to work and we encourage people to stop by for a snack and some coffee on their way. It’s also a chance for people to go multi-modal for longer distance commutes since Pasadena Transit, Metro and Metrolink are free for bicyclists on Bike to Work Day. For those who work from home, we invite them to come by and say hi, even if they aren’t biking to the office. Fresh air and some time on a bike is always a great way to start your work day.
